INFS1300 Week 1 - Early visionaries

The first two lectures are about exploring the Web is important to situate the view of the web today within the visions and seminal ideas of those whose work led to its development.



There are some early visionaries:
  • J.C.R. Licklider
  • Doug Engelbart
  • Len Kleinrock
James R.Killian: advocated the creation of the Defense Advanced Research Agency (DARPA)
->Advanced Project Research Agency (APRA, 1958)
J.C.R. Licklider: establish a time-sharing network, lead to ARPANet
There are several different networks
(1) Messenger Networks:
      passing messages from runner to runner
(2) Store & Forward Networks
(3) Circuit Switching:
      good for continuous information streams, e.g. the phone network
(4)Packet Switching
